Description
Jack was delivered to John Knowles & Co in October 1898 for use in the fireclay mines near Woodville, South East of Burton upon Trent. Jack was Hunslet works number 684 and was delivered in ‘Midland Railway Express style’ with vermilion motion brackets and buffer beams.
During World War I, the War Department needed 18-inch gauge locomotives for the supply depot at Deptford on the Thames. Hunslet Jack served as the basis for the design of twelve oil-burning locomotives, which were supplied in 'khaki all over' under the contract code name Waril. After the war, Sir Robert Walker purchased four of these locomotives for the Sand Hutton Light Railway on his family estate.
In 1920, John Knowles & Co ordered a new locomotive to complement Jack. Hunslet offered a coal-fired Waril Class locomotive, which was named Gwen. The Waril Class had been designed for the War Department during World War I for use at the supply depot in Deptford on the Thames. Twelve oil-burning locomotives, delivered in 'khaki all over', were supplied based on the design of Hunslet's Jack under the contract code name Waril.
This locomotive is a detailed version which is gauge adjustable (32mm and 45mm), available as gas or coal-fired, and can be fitted with optional extras such as a working steam whistle, 3 channel radio control and SSP Slomo.
